Yottabyte

A yottabyte (YB) is a decimal unit of digital information equal to 10²⁴ bytes: 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 bytes. In the SI sequence of data units, one yottabyte equals 1,000 zettabytes. It represents a scale far beyond the storage capacity normally discussed for a single application, company, or data center.

The term is most useful when describing extremely large aggregate datasets, long-term growth in global data creation, or theoretical infrastructure requirements. For engineering teams, thinking at this scale highlights problems that become dominant as data grows, including distributed storage, replication, transfer bandwidth, indexing, governance, and the cost of keeping data accessible.

A yottabyte should not be confused with a yobibyte, which is based on binary measurement. A yottabyte uses powers of 10, while a yobibyte uses powers of 2. The distinction matters when comparing storage specifications, capacity planning, and measurements reported by different systems.
